Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country following the rapid advance of opposition forces into the capital, Damascus, marking a significant shift in the nation’s ongoing conflict.

In a dramatic turn of events, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled Syria as opposition forces swiftly captured the capital city, Damascus. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed Assad’s departure, stating that after negotiations with rebel leaders, he “decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, instructing a peaceful transfer of power.”

The rapid advance of rebel forces into Damascus encountered minimal resistance from regime loyalists, leading to the collapse of Assad’s nearly 25-year rule. The Assad family had maintained control over Syria for more than half a century.

The current whereabouts of Assad remain unknown, with unconfirmed reports suggesting he may have died in a plane crash while attempting to flee. The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on all parties to “renounce the use of violence and to resolve all issues of governance by political means.”

Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali announced the government’s readiness to “extend its hand” to the opposition and facilitate the transition to a new administration. Rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani stated that Syrian state institutions would be supervised by Jalali until they are formally handed over to a transitional government.

The fall of Damascus and Assad’s departure mark a pivotal moment in Syria’s protracted civil war, opening a new chapter in the nation’s pursuit of peace and stability.
