WTO members voiced their views on the outcomes they would like to see from the second wave of fisheries subsidies negotiations in meetings during the first of a series of “Fish Weeks” held on 20-24 March. The meetings pave the way for deeper discussions next month on the best approaches for curbing subsidies contributing to overcapacity and overfishing. The chair of the negotiations, Ambassador Einar Gunnarsson, said members engaged with a positive spirit to lay down the foundation for coming to an agreement by the 13th Ministerial Conference scheduled for February 2024.

In a video message to a trade finance workshop in Kigali, Rwanda, on 22 March, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stressed the importance of dismantling financing barriers for small traders in Africa to increase their participation in global trade. She welcomed the opportunity for dialogue among banks, local government agencies and businesses, underlining this could lead to better cooperation. International Finance Corporation (IFC) Managing Director Makhtar Diop also provided a video message. The workshop, established at Rwanda’s request, was organized by the WTO and IFC with the support of the Rwandan government.

WTO members exchanged information on existing regulatory and legal frameworks on e-commerce at a dedicated discussion held under the Work Programme on Electronic Commerce on 22 March. Members also shared national experiences and challenges related to the establishment of those frameworks and the role the WTO can play in this area.
