The WTO has issued a call for young economists to submit papers for the 2023 WTO Essay Award. The aim of the award is to promote high-quality research on trade policy and international trade cooperation and to reinforce the relationship between the WTO and the academic community. Essays must be submitted by 2 June 2023.

WTO members confirmed on 27 January the appointments of Ambassador Einar Gunnarsson of Iceland and Ambassador Alparslan Acarsoy of Türkiye as new chairs of the Negotiating Group on Rules (NGR) and of the Committee on Agriculture in Special Session (CoASS), respectively. Ambassador Gunnarsson will chair the second wave of fisheries subsidies negotiations, following the historic Agreement adopted at the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) in June 2022, and Ambassador Acarsoy will steer the process to build momentum on agriculture negotiations.

The WTO Secretariat has circulated a meeting notice and list of items proposed for the next meeting, on 27 January 2023, of the Dispute Settlement Body, which consists of all WTO members and oversees legal disputes among them. The meeting notice is circulated in the form of a document officially called an “airgram”.
