In a candid conversation with Shabait, President Isaias Afwerki shared insights on global power dynamics, regional conflicts, and Eritrea’s path to sustainable development.
In a recent interview with Shabait, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki discussed pressing global and regional issues, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance, regional stability, and the need for a multi-polar world order. The conversation, held on November 30, 2024, provided a unique perspective on Eritrea’s approach to international affairs and domestic growth.
Speaking about the shifting balance of global power, President Afwerki highlighted the enduring influence of the United States in shaping global politics since World War II. Reflecting on the return of Donald Trump to the White House, he stated, “The return of Donald Trump to power should be examined within this broader context of historical U.S. foreign policy,” adding that American leadership remains a crucial factor in global affairs.
Regional Stability: A Call for Local Solutions
President Afwerki turned his attention to Sudan, expressing concern over the protracted conflict and external interference that has deepened divisions within the country. “The solution to the conflict in Sudan naturally rests with the Sudanese people,” he told Shabait. He stressed that Eritrea’s involvement in regional issues is rooted in its shared history with Sudan and a desire to foster stability across the Horn of Africa.
Regarding Ethiopia, President Afwerki addressed the enduring challenges posed by ethnic federalism, a policy he believes undermines national unity. “Ethnic polarization, as institutionalized in Ethiopia’s 1994 constitution, is a recipe for perpetual tension and cannot promote nation-building,” he said. He also linked Ethiopia’s 1998 border war with Eritrea to the divisive nature of such policies.
Developmental Goals for Eritrea
Domestically, President Afwerki outlined Eritrea’s priorities for 2025, including investments in water infrastructure, energy, housing, and transportation. Speaking to Shabait, he emphasized the necessity of addressing foundational issues for long-term progress. “An adequate and consistent energy supply is a key prerequisite for development across all sectors,” he remarked.
The president also stressed Eritrea’s commitment to a sustainable development model that avoids reliance on external forces. “We have always believed in charting our own path,” he told Shabait.
A Vision for the Future
President Afwerki’s interview highlighted Eritrea’s focus on addressing both domestic challenges and regional dynamics. His remarks reinforced the nation’s commitment to self-reliance and fostering stability in an increasingly polarized world.
