The Liberal Party (PL) has chosen Flavio Bolsonaro as its candidate for the upcoming Brazilian presidential elections, officially kicking off the race towards the October vote. The senator, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, thus inherits his father's political legacy, who is unable to run due to legal issues that have barred him from the electoral competition.
The announcement came during the party's convention held at the Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, where PL president Valdemar Costa Neto described Flavio Bolsonaro as the natural successor to the political project initiated by the former head of state, wishing him success in the electoral campaign.
The event also took on significant international importance with the presence of Argentine president Javier Milei, one of the main allies of the Latin American right. In his speech, Milei openly expressed his support for the PL candidate, emphasizing the need for a change in political leadership in Brazil and describing Flavio Bolsonaro's candidacy as the alternative to the incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
During the convention, Flavio Bolsonaro also received support from his family. Particularly moving was the moment of video messages sent by his brothers Eduardo and Carlos Bolsonaro, who reiterated their support for his candidacy and the importance of continuing the political path started by their father.
The electoral competition is shaping up to be a new confrontation between two opposing visions for the country. On one side is President Lula, running for another term leading the Workers' Party, and on the other is Flavio Bolsonaro, representing the conservative area gathered around the Liberal Party.
According to recent polls, the contest appears particularly balanced. A Datafolha survey gives Lula 48% of the preferences in a potential runoff, against 43% for Flavio Bolsonaro. In recent weeks, the senator has seen a slight decline in support following some internal controversies within the Bolsonaro camp and news regarding his connections with a banker involved in a financial fraud investigation.
Meanwhile, Javier Milei took the opportunity of his visit to Brazil to strengthen ties with local administrators close to the conservative front. In São Paulo, he was received by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, who awarded him the Order of Ipiranga, the state's highest honor, highlighting the importance of economic and institutional cooperation between Brazil and Argentina.
