germaniaIn the recent German federal election held on February 23, 2025, the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), led by Friedrich Merz, emerged victorious with 28.5% of the vote. This outcome positions Merz to potentially become the next chancellor, succeeding Olaf Scholz. However, the path to forming a stable government appears challenging due to the significant rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which secured 20.8% of the vote, marking its best performance to date.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD), under outgoing Chancellor Scholz, experienced a historic low, garnering only 16.4% of the vote. The Greens received 11.6%, while The Left (Die Linke) improved their standing with 8.8%. Both the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) failed to surpass the 5% threshold required for parliamentary representation, obtaining 4.3% and 4.9% respectively.

Merz has emphasized the urgency of forming a coalition government, likely involving the SPD and possibly the Greens, aiming for completion by Easter. He has underscored the importance of European unity and defense autonomy, especially in light of shifting U.S. foreign policies under President Donald Trump. Merz stated, “It really is five minutes to midnight for Europe,” highlighting the need for the continent to strengthen its own defense capabilities and reduce reliance on the United States.

Despite the AfD’s significant gains, Merz has firmly ruled out any collaboration with the far-right party, maintaining a stance held by mainstream German parties to isolate the AfD. The AfD’s surge is attributed to voter concerns over immigration and economic stagnation, particularly in eastern regions of Germany. This development reflects a broader trend of right-wing populism gaining traction across Europe.

The election results have also prompted discussions about Germany’s economic policies. Analysts suggest that while the conservative victory may bring stability to financial markets, it could also signal a cautious approach to public spending. The CDU/CSU’s commitment to fiscal conservatism may limit prospects for increased public investment, a point of contention during the campaign.

As coalition negotiations commence, the CDU/CSU faces the complex task of balancing the demands of potential partners while addressing the electorate’s concerns that have fueled the AfD’s rise. The formation of a stable government is crucial not only for Germany’s domestic agenda but also for its role within the European Union, especially amidst current geopolitical uncertainties.
