Daniel Noboa has been re-elected as Ecuador’s president, obtaining approximately 56% of the vote in the recent runoff election against leftist candidate Luisa González, who garnered about 44%. The National Electoral Council confirmed the results, and international observers, including the Organization of American States, deemed the election process transparent and legitimate.

Noboa, who initially assumed the presidency in 2023 following a snap election, campaigned on a platform emphasizing a hardline approach to crime, economic revitalization, and institutional reforms. His administration has implemented measures such as deploying military forces to address gang violence and proposing constitutional reforms to enhance security operations.

Despite a reduction in the homicide rate from 46.18 per 100,000 in 2023 to 38.76 in 2024, Ecuador continues to grapple with significant security challenges. Noboa’s government has also faced criticism for actions perceived as overreaching, including the controversial raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito to apprehend former Vice President Jorge Glas, which strained diplomatic relations.

González has rejected the election outcome, alleging electoral fraud without providing concrete evidence, and has called for a recount. Her claims have intensified political tensions, although no substantial irregularities have been reported by official monitoring bodies.

As Noboa embarks on his full term, he faces the dual challenges of addressing persistent security threats and fostering economic growth, while navigating a politically polarized environment. His ability to implement reforms and maintain public trust will be critical in shaping Ecuador’s trajectory over the next four years.
