Ahmedabad, India – In one of the worst aviation disasters in recent Indian history, an Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 241 people. The ill-fated flight, en route to London Heathrow, slammed into a densely populated residential area in the city’s Navrangpura district, sparking a massive blaze and widespread devastation.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:14 AM local time. Preliminary reports from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suggest a sudden loss of engine power during ascent. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud explosion before seeing the aircraft descending rapidly and striking multiple buildings. The impact caused several structures to collapse, complicating rescue efforts and adding to the casualty toll on the ground.

Among the victims were crew members, passengers of various nationalities, and residents of the area. Rescue teams managed to pull only one survivor—a 12-year-old girl—out of the wreckage. She is currently receiving intensive care at a local hospital.

Air India has confirmed the flight manifest included 28 foreign nationals, with passengers originating from the UK, US, Canada, and Germany. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling it a “heart-wrenching tragedy,” and declared a national day of mourning. The government has pledged full support to the families of victims and ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Flight safety experts from Boeing and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are being dispatched to assist Indian authorities. The black box has been recovered and will be analyzed for further insight into the crash’s cause.

This incident has reignited debate over the aging fleet of India’s national carrier and the country’s aviation safety standards, prompting calls for reforms and stricter oversight.
