Trump signals willingness to join—if Putin shows up.
Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine opened today in Istanbul, marking a critical moment in a conflict that has devastated both nations and rattled the global order. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in person, signaling Kyiv’s readiness to pursue a diplomatic solution. But the most notable absence was Russian President Vladimir Putin, who opted to send senior aides in his place.
The Kremlin delegation, led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, entered the talks with a guarded tone. Zelenskyy, by contrast, struck a hopeful chord, telling reporters, “We don’t expect miracles, but we do expect seriousness.”
Putin’s no-show immediately drew skepticism about Russia’s intentions. Analysts warn that without the Russian president at the table, the talks may lack the authority needed to produce binding outcomes. U.S. President Donald Trump, currently touring the Middle East, responded to the development by stating he would consider joining the process—on one condition: “If Putin’s in, I’m in,” he said bluntly.
Turkey, acting as mediator, opened the session by calling for “real courage” from both sides. Topics on the agenda include prisoner exchanges, humanitarian aid corridors, and steps toward a ceasefire. The talks are expected to continue through the week.
For now, hopes are fragile but alive. The question is whether a peace process can truly move forward when one of its key architects refuses to enter the room.
