Facebook and Instagram Accused of Causing Addiction: Class Action in Australia

Meta and its social platforms, Facebook and Instagram, are facing a class action lawsuit in Australia, accused of causing addiction among users, particularly harming the younger demographic.

The lawsuit, filed in the Federal Court in Sydney, is being pursued by the law firm Litigation Lending on behalf of eight claimants. They allege that Facebook and Instagram exposed users to harmful content, leading to social media addiction.

The legal entity, Litigation Lending Services, stated that it is funding the legal action for Australian families who "would have no practical means to pursue these claims against a global tech giant." "The proceedings raise significant issues regarding the design and operation of social media platforms and their impact on children and adolescents in Australia," said William Nolan, a lawyer from Litigation Lending.

A year ago, in August, Meta agreed to pay up to $17.7 million in the United States following accusations of deliberately designing its social platforms to create addiction among younger users.
