Contrada Guido

Rome – Contrada Guido is a cultural patronage project aimed primarily at the Italian-American community, with the goal of transforming a historic site in Calabria into an international cultural hub. The initiative includes American artist residencies, heritage restoration, artist studios, and a contemporary art park.

Donations—also supported by LoveItaly.org, a nonprofit that bridges the U.S. and Italy—are processed through a U.S.-based 501(c)(3), making them tax-deductible. The program offers a clear path for cultural recognition and active participation. Well-structured opportunities are also available for entrepreneurs and companies, with additional tax benefits.

Let’s take a closer look at this project, recently presented in New York City, which has already attracted strong interest from the Italian-American community.

Why this project speaks directly to Italian-Americans

Aurora e Mimi Talarico

Contrada Guido is not “just” a restoration project, nor simply a donation opportunity. It is an innovative initiative designed to reconnect Italian-American communities with their roots by supporting a cultural platform that blends heritage, contemporary art, and transatlantic dialogue.

The core idea is simple: to bring new life and a future to a historic Calabrian estate, transforming it into a place where memory and creativity meet—and where the United States plays an active role, not just as a spectator. A meaningful bridge that further strengthens ties between the U.S. and Italy, and between Italian-Americans and their land of origin.

The story of Contrada Guido

Contrada Guido

Contrada Guido is a historic residence located on the Ionian coast of Calabria, in the Gulf of Squillace, surrounded by greenery and just steps from the sea. Over more than 30 years of activity, it has established itself as a destination for high-quality hospitality, while also dedicating significant space to contemporary art.

Set within an 18th-century village, it is located near the Ionian beaches, about 30 minutes from the Sila mountains and 20 minutes from Catanzaro. Nearby cultural highlights include the Scolacium Archaeological Park, the Marca Museum, and the Biodiversity Park—an important open-air contemporary art center featuring works by Wim Delvoye, Marc Quinn, Stephan Balkenhol, Antony Gormley, Jan Fabre, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mauro Staccioli, Daniel Buren, Tony Cragg, Mimmo Paladino, and Denis Oppenheim.

Sophie e Guido Talarico

Since the 1800s, Contrada Guido has belonged to the Talarico family, major landowners who acquired the estate in the mid-19th century from Baron Perrone, a noble family of Franco-Provençal origin that arrived in Calabria after the Third Crusade alongside the Normans. Since then, the property has remained in the hands of the Talarico and Mottola di Amato families, marquises of Neapolitan origin and another historic Calabrian noble lineage. Today, the estate is managed by Guido and Sophie Talarico, who also lead a Rome-based publishing group.

What your support funds: a tangible cultural project

The development program includes:

  • Restoration of the Church of Madonna del Rosario and preservation of a rare early 19th-century fresco
  • Conversion of an agricultural warehouse into artist studios and workspaces
  • Transformation of the park into an open-air art gallery with installations and artworks
  • American Artist Residency Program: emerging U.S. artists hosted to live, create, and exhibit at Contrada Guido
  • Cultural programming and visibility through events in Italy, in collaboration with leading editorial and cultural organizations such as Inside Art, Associated Medias,  and The Talent Prize, as well as major institutions like the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome

Who is behind the project (and why it matters)

The initiative is promoted by Fondazione Patrimonio Italia, a private nonprofit institution, and supported by an already active cultural ecosystem connecting Italy and the United States.

Leading players from the Italian cultural and publishing world are involved, bringing production capacity, credibility, and international visibility. This is not an abstract idea, but a fully operational platform that connects culture, media, and audiences.

One donation, several returns

In addition to its ethical and cultural value, the project is designed to offer concrete benefits:

  • Tax deduction (U.S.): donations made through a 501(c)(3) are tax-deductible under U.S. law
  • Italy-related pathways (depending on donor profile): informational tools on Investor Visa options and tax frameworks under Italian law (details available in the project deck)
