In a rare outburst, former U.S. President Donald Trump directly insults Vladimir Putin, escalating rhetoric amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

ucrainaIn a striking departure from his typically reserved stance toward Russia’s leader, former U.S. President Donald Trump called Vladimir Putin’s recent statements “bull**it” during an interview aired Tuesday night on NewsNation. The comment, made off-the-cuff but with unmistakable clarity, marks one of Trump’s most direct public criticisms of the Russian president to date.

The remark came in response to Putin’s recent claim that NATO’s expansion was a “deliberate provocation” against Russia and that Ukraine’s leadership had orchestrated the ongoing war “to please the West.” Asked for his take, Trump responded: “Putin says a lot of things. Most of it is just bull**it — and everybody knows it.”

While Trump has faced criticism in the past for his perceived friendliness toward the Kremlin, this latest comment has stunned political observers and raised questions about his current foreign policy posture as the 2024 presidential campaign ramps up.

“He’s clearly trying to reposition himself,” said Dr. Marissa Lowe, a political analyst at the Brookings Institution. “This kind of language is red meat for his base, but it also signals a break — real or rhetorical — from his earlier praise of Putin.”

The Kremlin has not officially responded, but Russian state media denounced Trump’s remarks as “vulgar” and “unworthy of serious political discourse.”

Meanwhile, critics from both sides of the U.S. political spectrum weighed in. Republican senator Josh Hawley said Trump’s tone was “undiplomatic but not necessarily inaccurate,” while Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that Trump “only condemns authoritarianism when it suits him.”

Trump, however, appeared unfazed. Later that evening, he posted on Truth Social: “I tell it like it is. No one’s tougher on Russia than me — believe me.”

Whether the comment will affect U.S.–Russia relations or Trump’s electoral prospects remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the gloves are off.
